Shalom to all. I hope that this post finds you all well, healthy and full of strong and vibrant emunah in Hashem, His Torah and His True Tzaddikim.
I would like to try and help clarify and present the practical meaning and implication of the Shovevim period.
OVERVIEW
The Ari Zal writes that the exile in Egypt was mainly meant to rectify the blemish of wasted seed caused by Adam's refraining from his wife - Chavah - for a period of 130 years. In this period he was "heated up" by demons who caused him to emit wasted seed (this blemish was a by-product of the first sin of Adam).
The Jewish nation's descent and bondage in Egypt was meant to collect, rectify and elevate the fallen "sparks" of these lost souls resulted in Adam's blemish, who all found their way to Egypt due mainly to the importance Egypt had globally because of Josef's efforts and merit as viceroy of Egypt.
Since Adam's blemish will not be fully rectified until Mashiach comes, we in-a-sense relive this rectification work every year when the Torah portions of the Egyptian bondage are read publicly. Thus the period of the 6 weekly Torah portions from Shmot to Mishpatim (which recount the Egyptian bondage until the receiving of the Torah on Mount Sinai) are known as the weeks of S'hO'V'eV'I'M' (which are an acronym for the 6 Torah portions read in this time).
Being so, it is a time for working on self-improvement especially in matters of personal purity etc.
PRACTICES DURING THE SHOVEVIM
It is customary to get more involved in prayers and devotions which are aimed at helping a person get closer to Hashem and rectify his sexual blemishes of the past.

Of the many customs, here are a few common in Breslover circles:
- Saying Psalms every day. If possible to add also saying the Tikun HaKlali (10 specific psalms prescribed by Rebbe Nachman as the major rectification for sexual blemishes).
- Going to the Mikveh (ritual bath) every day (for men only)
- Going to the gravesite's of Tzaddikim and praying to Hashem that He help us in their merit.
- To refrain one day a week from eating any animal products (e.g. dairy, eggs, fish, meat, chicken etc.). In Breslov most have the custom of reserving this day as Thursday, since it is anyways a day of supplication and petitions in the daily morning prayer services. Some are lenient with food items containing animal by-products.
- To be more careful in giving Tzeddakah (charity) to worthy causes.
