HOLDING ON TO THE WEAPONS

BH

The Tikkuney Zohar states (29a): Who is victorious? He who joins the weapons in his hands. And what are these weapons? The 4 Species of the Sukkot festival (i.e. the Hadas (myrtle branch), Aravah (willow branch), Lulav (palm branch) and Etrog).

Reb Noson asks a very good question: if a person is victorious in the battle then why is he still holding the weapons in his hands? Let him drop the weapons! Surely if he is still holding the weapons in his hands, then he is not yet called victorious?

He answers that our main enemy in this long exile is called Amalek. As the Torah states clearly, the war with Amalek is a battle against Hashem from generation to generation. Only in the end, when Mashiach finally comes, will he be totally eradicated. In the meantime, our part in the battle is to simply stand up and fight him for the sake of Hashem. The fact that we continue fighting him is in itself our victory.

For Amalek's main power and ability is to distort and fool a person into believing that there is no more hope. HIs strong and convincing arguments are that Hashem has abandoned a person and that there is nor more need to keep on holding on and praying...

Yet the real truth is that a person has to be a real expert in knowing how to handle all situations and circumstances sent by Amalek and not to give in. This is in line with the penetrating words of King David: ... "and if I make my bed in hell, here You (Hashem) are". Meaning, that even if a person has fallen so far and low and is at the brink of despair from believing that even in his situation there is still hope, still he seeks out and "finds" Hashem there and then showing him hints that He is still there for that person - this is the true warrior using this expertise as his main weapon.

This holy weaponry is hinted to in the 4 species themselves:

The Hadas-myrtle branch symbolizes the spiritual delight and bliss which as yet are still beyond a person's reach - only a "scent" of it is accessible. It is the clear knowledge that everything is run by Hashem and there is no need to fear of despair. This level of awareness will only be internalized permanently in the future. For now all we can do is to aspire to it in an "in and out mode".

The Aravah-willow branch symbolizes the darkest and most futile situations being transformed into the greatest light and revelations of Hashem's kindness and Divine Providence. Having no scent or taste the Aravah signifies a total lack of anything good or positive. Yet with the ability of the Hadas, we reveal that in the Aravah too is hidden the greatest goodness, light and holiness.

However, to get to this we need the Lulav-palm branch. The Lulav, shaped like a sword is our main weapon. Having only taste (coming from the date tree) but no scent, it symbolizes our being purged and tested in the worldly desires and yet standing up and abiding by our spiritual goals and aspirations. This type of "embarrassment" of being exposed to accessible physical temptations and desires and yet aspiring to the spiritual existence hiding behind the physical veil creates a contradictory complex in a person which forces him to fight and stand up to pursue his goals - thus creating a type of shame and embarrassment of the joining of these 2 opposites. By using and complying with this Lulav "sword" we cut through the physical walls bringing us closer to and revealing more and more our spiritual goals and purpose.

The ultimate result of all this is the Etrog, which has both smell and taste. This signifies the accomplishment of successfully revealing the Divine Presence found in everyone, everything and every situation. Revealing that Hashem is the King especially here in this concealed world. And since the average Jew does not successfully reach this accomplishment, the Etrog in it's full beauty symbolizes the True Tzaddikim who do succeed in doing this job right. Thus "holding" the Etrog symbolizes "holding on" and following the advice and teachings given to us by these Tzaddikim, who help us to also succeed in using our own swords - the Lulav.

When combined - these 4 give the person the personal power and force to stand up to all tests and tribulations sent by Amalek - i.e. not to give up or give in to anything or anyone other than Hashem.

May we merit to never ever ever give up no matter how great the "illusory" odds are against us, and may we merit seeing the coming of Mashiach when the despicable and evil force of Amalek will be obliterated totally. And may we merit to proudly display our 4 "weapons" in the Holy Third Temple, speedily in our days, Amen.
