There are 10 types of song used in the composition of the book of Tehillim:
- Brakha
- Ashrei
- Maskil
- Shir
- Nitzuach
- Niggun
- Tefilah
- Hoda'ah
- Mizmor
- Hallelujah
Rebbe Nachman teaches that activating these 10 types of song can subdue the evil and impurity generated by the worst of sins. (He specifically emphasized the recitation of 10 specific Psalms known as the "Tikkun HaKlali"). For since sound and song can bridge a person from his mundanity to the greatest of spiritual experiences, it is specifically the means to help atone for a person's sins by reconnecting and realigning him with the Divine.
Reb Noson expands this idea and explains how this corresponds to the music played by the Levites in the Holy Temple while the Kohanim priests were involved in offering the animal sacrifices.
Since the main purpose of the sacrifices was to atone for sins, transgressions and iniquities, the music "escorting" the sacrificial ascent would then reconnect and realign the penitent (i.e. the Israelite bringing the sacrifice) to his source in the Divine.
And since today the daily prayers replace the daily sacrificial offerings, the words expressed in the prayers correspond to the Kohanim
So in a sense the Levite represents the voice, the Kohanim the words and the general Jewish populace as the ones requiring rectification.

In this week's Parsha (Shoftim) the Torah points out that the entire tribe of Levi - Kohanim and Levi'im alike - are excluded from inheriting the Holy Land.
Rashi brings down a drash (insight) from the Sifrei (Devarim 18:1):
"He (the tribe of Levi) will not have" - this refers to the inheritance of She'ar (this being the future inheritance of the Jews of the lands of Keini, Knizi and Kadmoni becoming a part of the Holy Land.
"...among his brethren" - this refers to the inheritance of the other 5 nations occupying the Land of Israel.
The lands of Sichon and Og were already conquered by the Jews and annexed to the Holy Land, and there was no need to warn the Levites not to inherit that land since Moshe himself supervised this.
Thus in total there were (are) 10 nations who have occupied the Holy Land and its extensions.
These nations occupying the potential Holy Land caused their impurity and immorality to cover up the holiness and light of the Holy Land. By removing these nations and their evil imprint, the light and holiness of the Holy Land become revealed.
Thus, in a sense, the 10 sections of the Holy Land being uncovered is synonymous with the rectification brought about through the 10 types of song bringing about rectification for a person's sins and blemishes. For both reveal the hidden good and bring about realignment with holiness
The connection between the Holy Land and the 10 types of song is also hinted to with what Yaakov told his sons when going down to Egypt a second time: "Take down with you "Zimrat Haaretz" - the songs of the [Holy] Land".
And since the Levites and Kohanim are the ones involved in "playing" the music (the Levites with the sound and the Kohanim as the articulators of speech [see above]), inheriting the Land has nothing to do with them - only with the penitents themselves (i.e. the Israelites).
Therefore specifically the Israelites - those requiring major rectification (since the Levites and Kohanim had to maintain a higher level of moral standards and purity while serving in the Holy Temple) - inherit the Land since it is their job and mission to have their blemishes and sins turned into merits and blessing - i.e. the Holy Land.
This is also why the Holy Land is also called the Land of "Israel" - i.e. the Israelites - as opposed to the Kohanim and Levi'im.

A SPECIAL ROSH HASHANAH OPPORTUNITY
Rebbe Nachman took an oath that anybody who comes to his grave in the city of Uman, the Ukraine, and gives a coin to charity in memory of Rebbe Nachman, and says the 10 Psalms known as the Tikkun HaKlali, he (the Rebbe) will pull out that person from the deepest abyss of hell no matter how severe his blemishes and sins.
Rebbe Nachman also said that on the Eve of Rosh Hashanah it is good to make a pidyon (a redemption through money).
[For more on this concept please listen to: likutey moharan lesson 215].
The followers of Rebbe Nachman combine both and perform them on the Eve of Rosh Hashanah in Uman.
To have the Tikkun HaKlali recited on your behalf by Rebbe Nachman's grave in Uman on the Eve of Rosh Hashanah, along with a Pidyon/redemption performed for you there too, you can send your charity/pidyon money through this paypal link:
