The Talmud (Chagigah 12b) qualifies for us the parameters of the word Shir: "Whoever is involved with Torah study at night will have a string/chord of Chesed (kindness) drawn upon them during the day, as the verse reads (Psalms 42:9) Hashem will command his Chesed [upon the person] whose Shiro-song [i.e. Torah study] was with Me during the night. And some say: whoever is involved with Torah study in this world - which is compared to night - will have a string/chord of Chesed drawn upon them in the future World - which is compared to daylight".
Rebbe Nachman expounds this verse from Psalms, explaining that the power of Shir-song can actually break and nullify the darkness/evil forces which are called Layla/night (please listen to: Shir and Nitzvuch - Battle and Victory).
Furthermore the Holy Zohar teaches that whenever the expression "Mizmor Shir" appears in the book of Psalms, it refers to a double portion of Shir-song (i.e.the Mizmor of Shir, which is another Shir). And this is similar to Shir HaShirim - the Song of Songs [which is also a "doubled" song].

With all this we can appreciate better the light and significance of Chanukah:
The 8 days of Chanukah take place at the onset of the darkest time of the year - the longest winter nights. These nights represent the darkest moments that a person faces in life, lack of clarity and enthusiasm to "enlighten" his faith and Fear of Heaven. Historically too, the Greeks/Yevanim sought to undermine Torah observance, placing the Jews in a "dark" predicament.
However, the power of "Shir" enlightens a person even while in the midst of darkness, turning it into the greatest light.
Thus the light of Chanukah is meant to enlighten a person with the radiance of Shir, leading to the thread/chord of Chesed/kindness to be activated and influence a person in their struggle to serve Hashem with enthusiasm and light.
Therefore, it is no wonder that the Psalm many have the custom to recite during the days of Chanukah (Psalm 30) begins with the words "Mizmor Shir". For as the Holy Zohar quoted above explains, this is a "double" Shir, which is needed to illuminate the 8 days of Chanukah.
To explain:
The Zohar explains that in the future a song-Shir played on 72 string/chords will be performed and this delight will be the onset of the Future Reward (this is hinted to in the above teaching of the Sages: "...will have a string/chord of Chesed drawn upon them in the future World..."). The number 72 is derived from the 4 letters of Hashem's Ineffable Name expanded in the following manner:
Y = 10
YH = 15
YHV = 21
YHVK = 26
sum = 72
This expansion of Hashem's 4-lettered Name in this format of going back to the first letter parallels the first 4 nights of Chanukah when we light the candles in a similar manner (i.e. 1, 1-2, 1-2-3, 1-2-3-4).
(please note: this is not intended in any way - even in the slightest - to contradict the clear Halakhah of lighting from the newest candle backwards. Rather, we view the newest candle lit every night as representing to the initial Yud of Hashem's Name)
But since the Chanukah light/miracle signifies shining this light "while still" in Exile, we need a second set of 4 letters to serve as a vessel to contain this intense light of Hashem's 4-lettered Name without experiencing what is called "To Much Light" that lead to an extinguishing altogether.
Thus, the second set of 4 candles lit on Chanukah correspond to the 4 letters of Hashem's Name ADNY which serve as a vessel to contain the light of Hashem's Ineffable Name - YHVK (ADNY is also how we pronounce this name while still in exile). They are lit also in the following expanded format:
Night #5 - candle #5 = A
Night #6 - candles #5-6 = AD
Night #7 - candles #5-6-7 = ADN
Night #8 - candles #5-6-7-8 = ADNY
(note: the first 4 candles remain consistent since they continue to activate the first Name of YHVK).
With this we can also understand why Shir HaShirim - Song of Songs - has specifically "8" chapters too (for more on all these concepts please listen to: THE DOUBLE SHIR OF CHANUKAH).
May we merit this Chanukah to truly experience Mizmor Shir, with all of it's ramifications into our daily living, and may this Shir enlighten our darkness until we truly merit hearing the song-Shir played on 72 strings of Chesed-kindness.
Chanukah Sameach and Shabbat Shalom
