Reb Dovid in Jerusalem has been suffering with diabetes type 2 for some time. It has been on the rise due to sloppy diets etc. On top of this he has developed arthritis in his left ankle plus pain in his right knee due to his obesity, making every step and move a major challenge.
Last night, Reb Dovid ate a piece of chicken and a bowl of soup that seemed to have been problematic, leaving him with excruciating pain all day, making it almost impossible for him to learn, daven and work properly. This also caused him to lash out at his family members.
To top it all off, he has been over-frustrated in finding the right Yeshiva for his son. The choices and the meeting with a Rosh Yeshiva today with all his physical and mental pain took a major toll on Reb Dovid.
He spent the rest of the day being negative, sad, dejected and cursing Hashem, himself and others, by every second word. How could he ever make himself happy in such a predicament?
However, Reb Dovid ended today with a very special mitzvah - a wedding.
The dancing and simcha at the wedding just made Reb Dovid forget instantly everything he was going through (even the pain in his feet!!). He danced and jumped with such intensity that he was the "star" of the wedding bringing joy to everyone else.
After leaving the wedding, although the physical and mental pain returned (especially in his legs!!), Reb Dovid was somehow able to take a positive outlook. Giving thanks to Hashem for the opportunity to do a mitzvah this itself gave him the strength to start again.

Rebbe Nachman teaches that the joy in doing a mitzvah is so powerful that it can lift up a person from the deepest pits of darkness and futility. Therefore when a mitzvah comes around a person's way, he should simply grab it and use it to enhance his joy. This joy then creates a vessel to help a person get out of all his ruts. More than this, commensurate to how low, dejected and futile he may feel about himself, this itself can later be used to propel and infuse the mitzvot he does with greater and greater joy.
For the joy in doing a mitzvah is even greater than the mitzvah itself, since it is the force that elevates the mitzvah to the highest of levels, bringing up a person too along with all of his problems, frustrations etc., with a better vantage point in dealing with them (for more on this topic please listen to: Likutey Moharan lesson 24).

"Re'eh - See that I am placing before you blessing and curses"
This is what you see - a choice - a very difficult choice since you don't know where you stand.
On the one hand you see the blessings due to the mitzvot you perform. But on the other hand you also see the curses/punishment for the blemishes and sins you transgressed too. Where do I hold? On which side am I?
However, this is what you see! You must bypass what you see as being a challenging test that makes you feel worried, depressed etc. and look for the good things you have done and can be happy about - like Reb Dovid.
If you take the mitzvot you do and rejoice with them, you can begin to "see" things differently.
May we merit to only "see" the good and blessings in front of us, using them to propel us to the joy of our mitzvot.
