THE SONG OF THE FUTURE

The Talmud and Zohar point to the correlation found between several items consisting of the number 10 - The Ten Utterances used in the Creation, the Ten Sefirot, the Ten Commandments and the Ten Types of Song used by King David in composing the Book of Psalms (see Pesachim 117a and Maharsha loc. cit., Tikkuney Zohar #13).

These Ten groupings are meant to be the balance for all of Creation and mankind's role and mission in life - to maintain and complete this balance.

This is the purpose behind the Covenant made between Hashem and the Jewish People - to ensure that they will seek to live out and perpetuate this balance until it's final completion and wholeness when Mashiach will finally come.

The Covenant between Hashem and us is brought forth in several items which actualize this Covenant - the circumcision of males and everything it entails (i.e. sexual purity), the study and observance of the Holy Torah, the day of Shabbat and the donning of Tefillin. If any of these are desecrated, the means and ability to maintain the balance in Creation become practically impossible.

More than this, if a person has already gotten "off track" and disconnected to these parameters of the Covenant, it becomes seemingly difficult to come back and get "on track". For this, assistance from Above is needed to help a person come back - i.e. to do Teshuva and return.

But even more than this (Teshuva) is needed to maintain the Teshuva/return so that one does return to falling "off track".

The key to this is Song. Namely the 10 Types of Song used by King David in composing the Book of Psalms. King David saw with his Divine Inspiration that the Jews in Exile would have great difficulty maintaining and committing to the parameters of the Covenant.

He therefore used the 10 Types of Song in composing the book of Psalms, with their link to the Ten Commandments/Ten Utterances/Ten Sefirot etc. to enable any and every Jew to reconnect no matter how low he may have fallen.

Furthermore, song being a reflection of joy is the main antidote for desecration of the Covenant, since sadness and sorrow are the main means and cause for a person to defile the Covenant in the first place.

Thus we find that when the Jews finally left Egypt - the bondage keeping them disconnected from Hashem and His Covenant - they had as their final test and difficulty to pass through the waters of the Reed Sea.

Without sufficient connection to the Covenant (the Jews as a whole were not immersed in Torah study or the observing of Shabbat etc) they needed major assistance from Above to pass through safely the Reed Sea.

The Midrash thus teaches that the merit of Joseph (whose body Moshe was carrying with him) who abstained from illicit relations with Potiphar's wife was such a merit and outstanding level of sexual purity, that it was enough to split the Reed Sea on behalf of the entire Jewish nation.

After passing safely over the Reed Sea, Moshe wanted to maintain this Teshuva process so that the Jews could reconnect to Hashem and the Covenant no matter how low they fall in life.

Thus he sang the Song of the Sea. Containing within it a foretaste of the 10 Types of Song (the Jews had yet to receive the Torah and 10 Commandments at Har Sinai so they still had yet to enter the Covenant with Hashem), he hoped to maintain their Teshuva process at least until they would receive the Torah/Covenant at Sinai.

Furthermore the 10 Types of Song are alluded to in the Yud (numerically: 10) at the beginning of the opening word of this song - 'Y'ashir.

Yashir is translated as "will sing", for Moshe foresaw that the Jews "will sing" the 10 Types of Song in the future, being the catapult for the final redemption.

We have an extreme merit that Rebbe Nachman of Breslov - over 200 years ago - revealed which specific Psalms in the book of Psalms contain the actual essence of the 10 Types of Song.

These 10 specific Psalms -known as the Tikkun HaKlali - are:
16, 32, 41, 42, 59, 77, 90, 105, 137 and 150.

May we have the merit of reciting them every day, thus maintaining our connection to the Covenant/bond with Hashem, and letting us have a part in bringing forth the finalized stability and rectification of the entire universe with the coming of Mashiach, Amen.

Shabbat Shalom
