THE EXCHANGE OF KORACH

The holy ARI writes that initially when Hashem began the act of Creation He created a vacated hollow space empty and void - so to speak - of any Godliness. He then sent a ray/line from the outer extremity of this vacated space into the center point. Once reaching this center point the ray/line "bounced" backwards, spreading throughout the vacated space. From this "bounce" all existence came into being.

Reb Noson explains and shows that this ray/line is actually a soundwave - representing the speech of Hashem in the act of Creation. It is our mission in life to sift out and connect to hearing this sound, as is expressed in the daily recitation of the Shema - "LISTEN O Israel, Hashem is our Lord, Hashem is one".

However, this "sound" can only be heard by corporeal beings through the "bounce" - i.e. the second sound of Creation. Specifically from the sounds of Creation - especially the sounds of Torah study and prayer - can we tune into and hear the sound of Hashem's initial voice of Creation.

For this reason music plays a major role in spiritual elevation and connection - i.e. we sing the words of the Torah portion with the cantillations, we sing the words of davening, we sing the songs of the Shabbat table etc. Through sound we connect to the initial soundwave of Hashem and pick up the right message.

This was also the role of the Levites in the Holy Temple, who sang and played the musical instruments during the sacrificial offerings.

The Cohen with his devotion of sacrifice and priestly blessings served as a channel to reveal the direct voice/sound of Hashem, while the Levites "accompanied" them with music and song to reach out and connect the diverse notes and, by extension, perspectives of mankind to this direct voice.

The Kabbalah teaches that the Cohen connotes the right side while the Levite connotes the left side.

The right side represents the act of bestowing without hindrance. However since this can be overwhelming and damaging, a constriction and "bounce" is needed to necessitate and control a proper balance in receiving the benevolence of the right side. This is the left side.

The Levites playing musical notes which are formed by causing breaks and pressure on air waves served as a type of constriction that formed the variances in sound.

Now, the holy Zohar teaches that Korach wanted to exchange "left with right". In other words he wanted to change and alter the importance of the bounce - the second sound of Creation.

He wanted that the importance and emphasis be exclusively on the second "bounced" sound in Creation - the effect of Creation - and not the cause. This blemish was considered akin to outward blasphemy since it would never lead people to seek out the initial voice/sound of Hashem, which is the raison d'etre of Creation.

Korach was considered such an extreme "leftist" that by totally detaching himself and even conflicting against the "right-wing" - i.e. the Cohen/Aharon - he left no room for his existence to continue. For if the second sound/bounce detaches totally from the initial soundwave it will cease to exist.

Thus Korach and his assembly were swallowed up by the earth - no more corporeal existence in Creation.

May we all seek out and accept our real place - with all of its constrictions and musical notes and melodies - and from our "motherland bounce" seek out the voice of Hashem.

Shabbat Shalom
