THE SLAVE FOR "LIFE" UNTIL THE JUBILEE

BH

In a situation where a man was caught stealing and did not have the means to pay back what he stole along with the fine, the rabbinical court would have the permission to sell this man on the market for a maximum period of 7 years. He is called an "Eved Ivri" - A Hebrew slave.

The conditions of the Hebrew slave were not "so bad", since he was fed and treated like a normal person who works respectable chores for his master. His master even gave him a Canaanite maidservant to cohabit with in order to bring in more Canaanite slaves to his master.

However, if when the 7 year period was up and the Hebrew slave wanted to continue staying with his master and Canaanite maidservant, the master brought back the Hebrew slave to the rabbinical court who then pierced his ear along an upright positioned door, deeming the Hebrew slave a slave until the Jubilee year. He is then called an "Eved Olam" - a slave for life (even though it is only for a maximum of 50 years).

Reb Noson teaches that the significance of the Jubilee year being the 50th year in the Shemitta/Sabbatical cycle corresponds to the 50th Gate of holiness - the highest level possible.

This level corresponds to the light and level of the true tzaddikim of the highest calibre, who merit tapping into this very high level.

The significance of a slave for life being set free on this 50th year connotes that a person who is a "slave" to his lusts and desires can only be set free completely through this high level attained by the true tzaddikim.

For the rule is that a person who is trapped cannot free himself. He needs help and assistance from Above. From a level way above his own level.

This is the scenario and significance of the Hebrew slave:

He was sold and enslaved due to his lusts and desires for up to 7 years when the Sabbatical year would issue his freedom. The number 7 corresponds to the holiness of Shabbat which is also a level above a person's true level. However, the Hebrew slave fell more and more to the extent that even the Sabbatical light cannot free him.

And as if that was not enough, he fell into such futility and despair that he actually agreed to stay in his enslavement for longer, not seeing any hope anyways in getting out.

So he agreed to stay until the Jubilee year, but in his eyes he is a slave for "life", since he feels that he can never get out of his enslavement to his evil desires and lusts.

However, the Torah teaches that it is the Jubilee 50th year that actually frees him from his slavery - i.e. - that the True Tzaddik with his awesome merit and power actually can help free even such a person who feels all hopeless and meaningless in his quest for purity.

The True Tzaddik who has reached the 50th level - classic examples being Moshe Rabeinu and Rebbi Shimon bar Yochai - can help even such a hopeless person.

This is the light and power of the Jubilee year which can free all types of slaves.

May we merit connecting to and finding the True Tzaddik today who can free us too of our enslavement freeing us from all our evil lusts and desires. Amen.
