In Likutey Moharan lesson 19 Rebbe Nachman introduces us to this concept called "completing the Holy Tongue through the Aramaic/Targum language.

On a practical level, this means that the holiness which comes from Above - called the Holy Tongue - must and can only be made complete from holiness sifted, clarified and revealed by man down on this earth of free-will with all of it's challenges. This challenge Rebbe Nachman calls Aramaic/targum, since Aramaic is an interface language separating between the Holy Tongue of the Torah and the impure language of the 70 nations (the impurity is reflected in the animalitic and unrestrained desires mainly in regards to sexual purity).

Thus when a person is purged and goes through the test of Aramaic which - as an interface - has an admixture of good and evil, purity and impurity, holiness and unholiness, and passes the test of elevating the good found within, he earns the title of completing the Holy Tongue through Targum, which is the goal and key of Creation.

This challenge in the domain of Aramaic is the goal of Creation, since Hashem wants us to earn and deserve any revelation of good that takes place in the world. Thus the challenge of Targum/Aramaic is necessary in order to complete a person's mission in life.

Reb Noson further develops this idea and explains that the Torah too has these two corresponding parts: the Written Torah being clear and straightforward corresponds to the concept of the Holy Tongue, whereas the Oral Torah along with it's conflict, discussions and differing opinions found in the Talmud correspond to the concept of Targum/Aramaic which requires clarification. Just as the Written Torah is only made complete through the clarification of the Oral Torah, so too the Holy Tongue is made complete through the good found and sifted out of the Targum language (for more on all of these concepts please listen to: LIKUTEY MOHARAN LESSON 19).

Rashi brings down 2 reasons for the death of Aharon's sons - Nadav and Avihu:
  1. They ruled Torah law in front of their teacher and rebbe, Moshe Rabeinu
  2. They entered and served in the Tabernacle after having drunken wine
The Talmud brings yet another reason - that they were not married and yet served in the Tabernacle.

All of these reasons are in some way connected to a blemish in the concept of the Targum/Aramaic language/Oral Torah.

Since Moshe Rabeinu received the Torah at Sinai in it's complete format - the Written and Oral Torah together with a complete harmony, Nadav and Avihu ruling a Torah law before him and without his permission is, in a sense a blemish in the Torah itself. Ruling a Torah law outside of the conduit of Moshe Rabeinu is a blemish of the completion of the Holy Tongue through Targum, since this specific format must be passed through and ruled through Moshe Rabeinu as he was unique person in the generation to know how to properly sift out the Torah law from the Targum/aramaic/Oral Torah and bring it to complete the Written Torah/Holy Tongue.

Wine/intoxication is also a blemish of the Targum/Oral Torah as it remixes any separation of good and evil accomplished in the realm of Targum. Since intoxication makes a person tipsy and unbalanced it ruins any balance achieved in the realm of Targum with it's good and evil extremities.

Furthermore, marriage which is basically the joining of 2 opposites where it is the goal and mission of man to elevate his wife through acts of holiness, is also a major clarification and cleansing of the realm of Targum. As a man is exposed to his sexual temptations in order to use them properly to procreate and fulfill the Will of Hashem, he is constantly being tested in this domain.

By Nadav and Avihu not being married, they could never achieve sifting out the good from this realm of Targum/sexual desire.

As a result of all this Nadav and Avihu entered the Tabernacle and offered an unauthorized incense offering which claimed their souls.

Lacking the completion of the Holy Tongue through Targum, they could not withstand the intensity of the incense offering which also contained within it the foul smelling galbanum, which corresponds to the evil of Targum, being rectified through the Holy Tongue (which corresponds to the other 10 pleasant fragrances in the incense).

May we accept and face our challenges sent to us from Hashem, thus elevating the good found within the domain of Targum/aramaic/good and evil.

Shabbat Shalom
