If we take the Parshahs up until now we see a specific pattern:
Bereishit - The primordial snake sees Adam and Chava having relations and lusts for Chava. The snake entices Chava to eat from the Tree of Knowledge so that he can get Adam killed and take Chava for himself. He also pollutes Chava by having relations with her.
Noach - The generation of the Flood is immersed in extreme immorality, bestiality, incest etc.. The verdict is sealed and except for Noach and his family the entire world is flooded with boiling water and sulfur as a measured punishment for all the wasted seed which is also warm and liquidy.
Lekh Lekha - Pharaoh is taken in by Sarah's beauty and seeks to seduce her, only to get punished for doing so. Hashem finally commits Avraham to the Covenant which entails circumcision and guarding the reproductive organ within the parameters of holiness and moral purity.
VaYera - Sodom and Amora are destroyed due to their wickedness and immorality, as is attested to by the Torah's account of them wanting to have homosexual relations with the angels. Lot has relations with his daughters bringing in the nations of Moab and Ammon with their illicit beginnings. Abimelekh - like Pharaoh - is also taken in by Sarah's beauty, only to get punished for trying to seduce her. Yitzchak is born and circumcised - the first born Jew with all the sanctity in entails.
Chayey Sarah - A fitting wife for Yitzchak is sought and found - Rivkah - who will properly mother the future Jewish nation within the parameters of holiness and purity. With this, a solid-rock foundation is laid for the future Jewish Nation based on holiness and purity in matters related to the Covenant - sexual purity.

That the Torah begins with this specific pattern shows us the paramount importance of guarding the Brit - i.e. the Covenant. For Brit has a numerical value of 612. Add one for the word itself: 613 - the entire corpus of the Mitzvot outlined in the Torah. Guarding the Brit is the gateway for guarding and keeping the entire Torah.
Thus, it is no wonder that the Talmud, Midrash and Zohar illustrate how severe is the punishment and damage caused for blemishing the Covenant (see Reishit Chokhmah, Sha'ar HaKedushah, chapter 17 for a condensement of all these sources).
It is also no wonder how and why Rebbe Nachman, seeing that already in his generation the world was already caught up in this blemish, sacrificed and toiled so hard to seek a remedy and rectification for this blemish to those seeking repentance.
Rebbe Nachman revealed a rectification which cleans all damage caused due to blemishing the Covenant. This rectification entails reciting the following 10 Psalms from the Book of Tehillim together and in this specific order:
- Mikhtam LeDavid - Psalm 16
- LeDavid Maskil - Psalm 32
- LaMnatzeach Mizmor LeDavid - Psalm 41
- LaMnatzeach Maskil LiVney Korach - Psalm 42
- LaMnatzeach Al Tashchet LeDavid - Psalm 59
- LaMnatzeach Al Yedutun - Psalm 77
- Tefilah LeMoshe - Psalm 90
- Hodu LaHashem Kir'u ViShmo - Psalm 105
- Al Naharot Bavel - Psalm 137
- Halleluyah, Hallelu El BeKodsho - Psalm 150
